Living Abroad and Feeling Unseen or Disconnected?

Adjusting to life in a new country can be exciting — but also deeply disorienting.

Maybe you're dealing with culture shock, identity shifts, or simply missing the ease of being understood, it’s normal to feel out of sync.

Therapy with someone who shares your cultural lens can make all the difference.

I offer individual therapy for American expats in London and throughout Europe — combining clinical training with lived experience.

Common Challenges for Americans Living Abroad

  • Culture shock or difficulty adjusting to a new way of life

  • Feelings of loneliness, disconnection, or emotional displacement

  • Relationship strain or lack of a familiar support system

  • Stress navigating foreign healthcare or mental health systems

  • Reverse culture shock or uncertainty about going home

  • Loss of identity, purpose, or internal direction

  • Grief over “missing out” on milestones back in the U.S.

Therapy That Understands Your Story

As a fellow American living abroad, I understand the in-between.

I’ve felt the mix of awe and ache that comes with expat life — and I know how validating it is to speak with someone who just gets it.

With me, you won’t have to explain the small things or edit your words.

Instead, we’ll focus on helping you feel more anchored, supported, and emotionally aligned with this chapter of your life.

Adjustment Disorder & Life Transitions Therapy for Expats (FAQ)

Relocating to a new country can stir more than excitement—it can awaken anxiety, loss, or identity confusion. Whether you moved to the UK, Spain, or elsewhere in Europe for a job, relationship, or life circumstance, the emotional impact of starting over is real.

I specialize in helping expats and international professionals navigate these transitions through a somatic, trauma-informed, and mindfulness-based approach so that you can feel grounded and at home again.

  • Adjustment disorder describes the emotional and physical stress that arises when life changes feel overwhelming. According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013), it involves distress or difficulty functioning within three months of a major life stressor—like relocation, cultural transition, or career change. For expats, this can appear as homesickness, fatigue, irritability, or feeling “stuck” between worlds.

  • Relocation touches every layer of identity: where you live, how you connect, and who you are becoming. From a trauma-informed lens (Porges, 2011), the nervous system seeks familiarity and safety. When everything changes—language, culture, community—your body may respond with anxiety, restlessness, or withdrawal. Therapy helps you regulate, process loss, and rebuild a sense of safety in your new environment.

  • Somatic therapy (Levine, 1997; Miller-Karas, 2015) works with the body’s sensations to release stored tension and calm the nervous system. Mindfulness, as defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn (1990), cultivates non-judgmental awareness of the present moment—helping you respond with compassion instead of self-criticism.
Together, these approaches support you in recognizing your body’s stress signals, grounding in the present, and discovering inner stability despite external change.

  • If distress lasts longer than expected, interferes with work or relationships, or feels heavier than you can manage, therapy can help. You don’t need to wait for a “crisis” to seek support—therapy can be a stabilizing resource for growth, clarity, and integration.
